Luke was the Illegitimate child of Mary Ann Paddy as confirmed by the1881 Census entry for his Grandfather Thomas Hyatt Paddy and his birthcertificate. By 1891 Luke was an inmate and schoolboy at the DistrictCertified Industrial School in the parish of St Martins, Birmingham. When Luke was aged 12 he was at the Gem Street Certified IndustrialSchool (see note 1) in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Bishop Ryder ofBirmingham. A quote provided by Paddy researcher Doreen McCann, aboutlife in the industrial schools of the times, paints a soberingpicture. "Spare a thought for the boy or girl who was placed in anindustrial school in the mid-19th century. These were established toeducate deserted or orphaned children as boarders from the age ofseven to 15 years, and also admitted children from destitute familiesas day pupils. Given their daily schedule and diet, it was hardlysurprising that an inspector at the Gem Street Industrial School in1853 described the children as docile."
