Individual Note:
     Philip, bom 1st June 1803, was educated at Haileybury College, wherehe took the Gold Medal for Arabic, Persian, and Hindostanee, and highhonours in other branches. He became a magistrate, judge, &c. in theEast India (Civil Service, and after a long and distinguished serviceof over twenty years, retired in the year 1849. After his return toEurope, he received an address from the Native inhabitants of Surat,in which province he had long administered justice,

Individual Note:
     Captain Poyntz Stewart, who was born in 1736 at Lisburn, Ireland, andbaptized there on 21st June of that year ; the entry in the parishrecords noting him as " son of Cornet Cha' Stewart." On 16th February1756 he entered the 1st (Royal Scots) Regiment; became Seniorlieutenant in 1763 ; Captain-Lieutenant 14th August 1765 ; JuniorCaptain 1st October 1766 ; Senior Captain in 1772 ; and retired on23rd June of the following year, after long and distinguished serviceunder Colonels the Honourable James St. Clair (appointed 1737), Sir H.Erskine (appointed 1762), and John, Duke of Argyle. On leaving theArmy he, through family friendship with Lord Hertford, received anexcellent appoint-
ment as Committee-Clerk in the House of Lords. On 8th September 1763he had married Magdalene, daughter of the Reverend Philip Gayer ofDerriaghy, by his wife Agnes, dauorhter of Reverend H. Echlin. CaptainPoyntz Stewart died on 9th April 1823 at Lisburn, aged eighty-seven,and was there buried on the 11th of that month. His will, dated 20thMay 1809, was proved on 26th November 1823 in Dublin. He left byMagdalene Gayer, his first wife, (having married again without issue)- Charles, Philip, and William.
